The Story of The Ranch at Rock Creek

Montana's first Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Property

“I think the American West draws people because there’s still an idealism for the American Western frontier. People discovered Montana because it’s almost the size of California and there’s only a million people. So I think Montana is kind of one of the last big wide open western states. I think when people come out west they start to put their phones away and forget about the hustle and bustle of their jobs in the cities and breathe fresh air and look at wildlife and in a way kind of looking back at their childhood when they would just go outside and play and the west is kind of a big playground for people. I think there’s a yearning, particularly for people in the cities to get fresh air and wide open spaces, they tend to decouple from the stresses of everyday life. Adults really have a little kid in them.”

The History of The Ranch at Rock Creek

We love letting our guests know that The Ranch at Rock Creek is the world’s first Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Ranch—a history-making distinction that represents the intersection of human vision and nature’s artistry.

Every time you step out to enjoy an activity curated by one of our Ranch Ambassadors, your experience is centuries in the making. Forged by glacial flooding, the land upon which The Ranch at Rock Creek was built embodies the grandeur of the Great American West. What was at one point a 2,000-foot-deep lake is known today as Rock Creek Valley, surrounded by the Sapphire, John Long, and Pintler mountains— themselves a product of ancient tectonic alignment.

With its modern roots planted in Montana’s storied gem mining history, The Ranch at Rock Creek began as a mining claim following the Homestead Act of 1862, evolving through decades of frontier resilience. Originally homesteaded by W.W. Shaffer and P.W. White, the land has continuously operated as a working cattle ranch, its original 19th-century barn and historical structures preserved across time.

In 2007, after a 20-year search for the perfect setting to live out his American West dream, current owner Jim Manley transformed The Ranch at Rock Creek into the award-winning luxury guest experience we’re proud to share with you today. Now, The Ranch at Rock Creek is the ultimate all-inclusive ranch vacation that preserves the spirit of the Wild West and celebrates nature’s bounty.

Testimonials

“We especially enjoyed the additional activities planned for the ranch's Autumn Fest which we experienced for the first time. Seeing the new Rod and Gun Club, learning about the Mission Mustang, mining for sapphires, lunch at the Blue Canteen and dinner and music in the Buckle Barn were great memories. It was a beautiful way to celebrate birthdays and family time with our youngest daughter in her senior year of high school. We would welcome and treasure a return visit! ”
